Permanent Deck Work Begins

Last weekend, I along with Cheryl's dad & grandpa began work on the 1st phase of the permanent deck off the back of the house. We started by removing the temporary deck we built to pacify county code requirements for occupancy, then began digging 6 2-foot deep holes where the support posts would be cemented into the ground. After the holes were dug and all the posts were supported with 2x4's and aligned, we began mixing the quickrete. After mixing & pouring a few of the 13 bags, we quickly realized we were going to need more. I made a quick trip to Lowe's to pick up 10 more of the 80 lb. bags. The extra 800 lbs. in the trunk of my Accord probably didn't do much for my suspension.....my rear tires were barely visible on the trip back to the house! The car and I made it back in one piece though and we finished getting all the posts in.

The next step is to attach the beams to the exterior of the posts and then interior posts, followed by building the deck floor, railings and finally steps. Once complete it will be approximately 15'x16'. Hopefully it will be finished by mid November....just in time for an outdoor Thanksgiving dinner! j/k

The 2nd phase of the deck will be bigger & hopefully easier since it will be built much closer to ground level. I hope to start the 2nd phase by next summer and although I'm not sure of its exact dimensions I'm guessing it will be about 20'x25' with built-in benches.
